GRADUATION DAY 2007

MGMCRI attained its one of the most important milestone when it hosted the Graduation Ceremony of its Pioneer batch (The Trail Blazers-2001). The Event marked the start when the graduating students and the staffs presented a marvelous evening with mind-blogging cultural programs on the 24th. On 25th August, it was a majestic view when the Possession entered the locale in the outfit of the day. The Trailblazers were awarded the graduation scroll. Honorable Vice Chancellor of Pondicherry University was the Guest of Honor. The Chairman, Advisor, Director and Dean addressed the gathering and offered their blessings to the Graduates. When the Graduates took the Hippocrates oath, it marked the start of a new era. The torches for tomorrow are ready. The Historical event concluded with a graduation dinner, where the graduates, parents and the Staffs dined together.

PUDUCHERRY: Vice-Chancellor of the Pondicherry University Jalees A.K. Tareen has urged medical institutions to come together and form a network so that they can create a common state-of-the-art research facility. In his address at the first Graduation ceremony of the Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute (MGMC&RI) on Saturday, Mr. Tareen said that the research should draw attention of the world.
Outlining areas that medical institutions could work on, he said they could organise national and international meets and bring out research journals. Stressing the need for reaching out to the people in rural areas by setting up clinics there, he said this would go a long way in extending service to the poor masses.
More universities and institutes must be started in rural areas so as to bridge the urban-rural divide, he opined.
Mr. Tareen said for most academic institutions, the university had been a place that gave them their affiliations, increased number of seats and processed applications. He hoped that there must be greater interaction between the two in the areas of research and academics.
He also presented the scrolls to the passing out students. Of the 70 students, who got their degrees, 20 got distinctions.
Lakshmi Sowjanya Chekuri was awarded the Best Outgoing Student Award and Archa Sharma was awarded the Best All Rounder Award.
M. K. Rajagopalan, chairman, Sri Balaji Educational and Charitable Public Trust, which runs MGMC&RI, said that the passing out of the first batch of students was a proud moment for the college, parents, staff and students and urged the doctors to be kind and polite to patients.
James. J. Gnanadoss, college director, who presented the annual report, said that in June 2006 the Medical Council of India granted full recognition to the institute and it had been listed as a medical institute in the World Directory of Medical Schools of the World Health Organisation.
The Department of Dermatology had been included as a site for HIV sentinel surveillance programmes and TB and chest medicine in the national DOT programme.
